Weddington Thistle Under 7's competed in their first Tournament on 12th May 2007 at Hinckley United and produced 5 excellent performances. The results (3 losses & 2 draws) do not tell the whole story.
In the first match against Oadby Owls, the boys began well, but mid way through the match Oadby scored. A couple of minutes later Weddington won the ball in midfield and David played a perfect ball through to Thomas who finished with a shot into the corner. As the match went on both teams battled hard and it was unfortunate that with the last kick Oadby scored the winner past an unsighted Samuel L..
Against a strong Ambleside Swifts team, Weddington soon found themselves 3 goals down. However, as they were to show all day, the boys continued to battle and Thomas S once again scored to leave the result 3-1.
Blaby & Whetstone were next up and a fantastic free kick provided the oppositon with the first goal. It was soon 1-1 as strong play in midfield by Brendon-Lee & Samuel L allowed David to play the ball to Thomas, who slotted the ball cooly past the goalkeeper. Unfortunatley, Blaby & Whetstone were able to score again with 10 seconds left.
Against Beaumont Town, the boys played reaaly well, with strong defensive play from Sam H and Luke P not allowing the opposition a sight of goal. It was slighty against the run of play when Weddington conceded a goal. No-one gave up and as the ball came out to the edge of the box David smashed in an unstoppable shot into the corner off the net.1-1 the final score.
The final game was against Stoke Golding Swords and Weddington produced a fantastic display, taking the lead with Thomas once again scoring after being put through by David. A first victory was now so close, but once again Weddington were to be denied. With a minute left a Stoke Golding player went down in the area and the referee gave a penalty. The Stoke Golding player gave Brendon -Lee no chance and the match ended in a draw.
Although the Team were forced to play the first 3 matches with only 6 players this did not hinder them or stop them from playing some quality football.
Eveyone one of the boys gave 100%, tackling hard, passing the ball around and enjoying themselves - they were a credit to themselves and the parents/supporters who turned out to watch.
A special mention must be made to Alex M, who came and played in the final 2 matches - he battled hard, passed the ball well and showed a great deal of potential.
