We made a good start to the tournament, grinding out a hard fought draw against Admirals Black. Attacking wise we never really got going, but we defended well & James made a number of good saves. We were very unlucky not to beat Southam Yellows, as we came close on numerous occasions, their keeper & the post keeping them in it. Against Southam Reds we took a deserved lead when Tom Brown latched onto a loose ball to fire home from o/s the box. The game ebbed & flowed for a while, before Southam equalised from a speculative shot which caught James by surprise & he couldn’t hold on to it. Both teams had chances to win, but couldn’t apply the finish. An early counter attack goal put us up against it & we struggled to get back into the game. Our lads were over run at times as Rugby quickly made it 2. We battled hard to get back into the game, but couldn’t find the net. Rugby added a 3rd late on to seal the win. In the early stages both teams matched each other, then a defensive mix-up grifted Wardens their 1st. We tried to get back into the match, but couldn’t find a way thru. Their 2nd goal came after we had missed a few chances to clear. Our final match was a bit disappointing. Some of the good football we had played early on, seemed to go missing, as passes when astray or we didn’t pass at all. We got it together a bit near the end, but we were already 2 down.
Overall our lads had played well. Our passing & support play was very good at times & our defence general coped well, preventing chances & setting up attacks.
Player of the Tournament – James Carnell – James made many good saves in all the games, some of which were superb. His catching was also good in wet slippery conditions. He looked confident thru-out, giving us a good solid base to build our performances from.
